Number of flights departing Glasgow Airport drops by 94% amid coronavirus crisis

The number of flights departing from Glasgow Airport has dropped by 94% amid the coronavirus crisis, an investigation has found.

An investigation by the BBC Shared Data Unit has found that nine in 10 flights have been grounded across the UK since the Government introduced strict measures to slow the spread of coronavirus.

Flight tracking website Flightradar24 recorded just 25 departures from the airport last week, compared to 416 flights in the week up to the UK's lockdown - meaning a drop of 94% in take-offs.

Many of the flights that are still taking place will be cargo and freight journeys.

The news comes as Air Canada announced that flights on their route between the airport and Toronto Pearson were subject to a “full summer suspension” amid the ongoing crisis.

The announcement comes after the Canadian airline had already significantly reduced its services, and grounded a large section of its fleet.
