Number of daily Covid deaths in UK at lowest level for six months

Today has seen the lowest number of new Covid-19 deaths announced in nearly six months.

The Government said a further 17 people had died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19 as of Monday – the lowest daily figure since September 28.

It brings the UK total to 126,172.

Separate figures published by the UK’s statistics agencies for deaths where Covid-19 has been mentioned on the death certificate, together with additional data on deaths that have occurred in recent days, show there have now been 149,000 deaths involving Covid-19 in the UK.

The Government also said that, as of 9am on Monday, there had been a further 5,342 lab-confirmed cases in the UK. It brings the total to 4,301,925.

The latest figures were released as Health Secretary Matt Hancock thanked those involved in the vaccine rollout after the total number of doses administered passed 30 million.

He said on Twitter: “Over 30 MILLION vaccines have now been delivered across the whole UK The vaccine roll-out is showing the best of Britain – THANK YOU to the team involved.”

Mr Hancock also said that 1.8m covid tests were "delivered" yesterday.

"Mass-testing is a vital tool in our fight against COVID-19", tweeted the Health Secretary.

"Fantastic work by the testing team, who delivered over 1.8 MILLION tests yesterday. A huge team effort. Huge thanks to everyone involved.
