There has been a large jump in the number of covid patients in hospital in Knowsley in the past month.
On December 12, there were 54 covid inpatients under the care of St Helen’s and Knowsley Hospital Trust.
According to the most recent data available, as of January 4 there were 110 patients being treated in hospital for covid, twice as many as the previous month – with three patients receiving mechanical ventilation.

The levels of covid patients currently receiving treatment at the trust, which runs Whiston Hospital in Knowsley, are at the same level as February 2021, when the country was still in the grip of the deadliest wave so far of the pandemic.
Cases in the borough now stand at 2,729, making it one of the most prevalent areas in the country for coronavirus infections, with over 4,000 new cases identified in the last week alone.
Six new deaths have also been registered in Knowsley in the week leading up to January 10.
While the vaccination rate in the borough has risen slightly in recent days, with nearly 76% of people having now received their first dose, nearly 70% their second dose and almost 47% their third dose, public health officials are continuing to urge residents to get jabbed, with a series of drop in locations available across the borough over the coming days.
