Number of coronavirus cases in UK rises to 319

A total of 319 people have tested positive for coronavirus in the UK as of 9am on Monday, up from 273 at the same point on Sunday, the Department of Health said.

The number of cases has risen by 46 between 9am on Sunday and 9am on Monday.

The Department of Health said a total of 24,960 people have been tested with 24,641 negative results.

Three patients have died after testing positive for the illness.

Downing Street said that at the Cobra meeting today “a range of steps were discussed to contain and delay the spread of coronavirus in the coming weeks”.

The Prime Minister’s official spokesman said a meeting of the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage) was expected in the “next day or so”.

Sage would advise ministers on modelling the impacts of measures which could be used and “most crucially, the optimum time to do so to make sure that they have the widest possible impact”.

Herefordshire has had its first confirmed case of Covid-19, Public Health England (PHE) in the West Midlands has said.

Public Health England (PHE) and Leicestershire County Council have confirmed a second case of Covid-19 in Leicestershire.
