Number of coronavirus cases in Nottinghamshire increases as UK death toll surges by more than 100

The number of confirmed cases of coronavirus has surged to more than 170 in Nottinghamshire.

Public Health England figures show 67 people have tested positive in Nottingham, up from 57, while there are now 109 cases in Nottinghamshire, up from 92.

There are now 27 new cases in the county, bringing the total to 176.

The number of cases has continued to increase despite the country now being on lockdown since late on Monday night, when Boris Johnson told the nation to remain indoors.

As of 9am on March 26, a total of 104,866 have been tested.

PHE says 93,208 were negative, while 11,658 were positive.

Of those hospitalised in the UK, 578 have died, including six people in Nottingham.

Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust is now appealing to get more nurses in its hospitals, including the Queen's Medical Centre and City Hospital.

The trust's chief nurse said this is to help deal with the "expected rise" in cases in the coming weeks.

The Government also announced today, during a conference held by chancellor Rishi Sunak, that self employed workers can also apply for support.
