AGARTALA: With the arrest of a lodge owner in the vicinity of Agartala Government Medical College and an employee of Autonomous District Council administration, the number of people held in connection with the escape of undertrial Turkish ATM hacker Hakan Zamburakan has gone up to four.
Last week, the police arrested Shakib Tripura (23) from the Manubazar area of South Tripura who had allegedly ferried Hakan from the hospital where he had made his escape to the Bangladesh border and Sukhen Banik of Barjala area of city who had met Hakan in jail.
Lodge owner Badal Banik had allegedly escorted Hakan out of the hospital. ADC employee Renu Debbarma, a resident of bordering Manicherra hamlet of Khowai and a surrendered militant, had helped him cross the India-Bangladesh border. However, the police said more people were involved, from Hakan’s fellow prisoners to members of the legal profession and border security.
Police sources said Hakan apparently came in contact with Shakib through his relative, the dreaded criminal Swarna Tripura, lodged in the same jail. Hakan had been using a smartphone inside the jail in connivance with a few jail staff, which helped him plan his escape.
The police also suspect the involvement of an advocate and a court clerk besides some businessmen who had allegedly arranged a huge amount of money to help Hakan escape. “We are in the process of issuing an international alert against Hakan,” a police officer said.
The sources said taking advantage of lax security in the hospital, Hakan (54) escaped through a window of the toilet. The security personnel esorting him noticed his absence inside the clinic about half an hour later and raised the alarm.
