'Significant bed shortages' at Nottingham's hospitals prompts bid for new £7.8m modular ward

Nottingham's City Campus Hospital is seeking a new ward as the Trust continues to suffer with "significant bed shortages."

The 20-bed modular ward for elective surgery would come at a cost of £7.8m capital funding.

With winter fast-approaching the pressure on elective beds is becoming more of a challenge for NHS workers with patients at an increased risk of harm due to long waits for surgery.

The ward will also support bed shortages across the Trust and provide additional capacity for elective surgery.

The case was approved at IGC on October 27, but a revenue case is still required.

Some of the risks of not going ahead with these plans were laid out during a Nottingham University Hospitals Trust board meeting. A report said: "If we do not achieve the ambitions for our estate through TNUH including preceding enabling and backlog works then we may not have buildings that are fit for the delivery of healthcare or a suitable environment for staff.

"If we do not invest in our estate we may not have safe premises that are fit for the delivery of high quality care we may cause harm to patients and staff."

The ward build will be completed by April 2022.
