NUFC Foodbank reveal staggering amount raised in urgent appeal to football fans

The NUFC Foodbank has revealed its Charity Not PPV appeal has raised a staggering £16,000.

The campaign was launched in the wake of the decision to air Newcastle's Premier League game with Manchester United on pay-per-view TV.

With fans unable to attend matches due to the current social distancing rules, all top-flight games have been shown on Sky Sports or BT Sport, but from this weekend, a selection of games were pay-per-view only.

This caused uproar among supporters - many of whom already pay for Sky or BT and a season ticket at St James' Park.

So when it was suggested as part of the #CharityNotPPV movement to donate the £14.95 they would have paid to watch the match to the NUFC Foodbank instead, many fans took up the offer.

And today, organises revealed just how much they raised.

A tweet from the NUFC Foodbank account read: "Morning All # GenerousGeordies ! We are proud to announce that we - YOU - have donated & raised SIXTEEN THOUSAND POUNDs from the # CharityNotPPV campaign An absolutely incredible amount including £11,000 alone yesterday from over 1000 donators. Best fans in the world. #NUFC"

That smashes their previous record of matchday donations by some distance, with a staggering £11,000 raised on Saturday.
