NUFC fans Foodbank among charities to benefit from empty stands at St James' Park on match-day

Newcastle United will take advantage of the empty stands at St James' Park on match-days to promote charities - including the NUFC Fans Foodbank.

Chronicle Live understands that the Foodbank's message and text donation number will be placed in prominent places throughout the stands making sure it is picked up by the television cameras.

With no spectators allowed in the stadium due to COVID-19, and most games being broadcast free-to-air - the audience watching at home presents a fantastic opportunity to promote, as one source put it, 'causes close to the club's heart'.

The first game back at St James' Park will be on Sunday, June 21, when Newcastle take on Sheffield United in front of the Sky Sports cameras.

While the lower tiers of Premier League stadiums will look similar - with clubs set to have the same wrap-around mixed with sponsors - it is understood that clubs could then choose how they were going to fill the rest of the stadium up with Newcastle understood to be keen to promote local causes.

The fans' foodbank, an offshoot of the West End Foodbank, often raises thousands of pounds every home match-day with a collection point behind the Gallowgate.

As well as the Foodbank, the message of 'United as One' - the club's anti-discrimination drive, and the NUFC Foundation's mental health programme 'Be A Game Changer' will make up the artwork in the stadium.

It is also likely that artwork relating to the club will also be on display - such as the club crest or black-and-white stripes.
