A black history month event that will bring human stories to life will be taking place in Leeds this weekend.
Nubian Noire will be holding the event at Kirkgate Market on Saturday, October 30, from 10am until 5pm with the theme “don’t judge a book by its cover”.
As well as food, light entertainment and a children’s craft corner, there will also be eight human libraries where people will share their life lived experiences from topics including race and mental health, in line with the theme.

A human library is made up of volunteers who are the books and they have open and honest discussions about their experiences with people in a safe environment but this will be from 1pm.
Dionne Edwards, founder of Black Voices Matter and Nubian Noire said: “We’ve been going since lockdown eased and working with Leeds Kirkgate Market with our pop-up markets.
“We’ve also worked in collaboration with St John’s Centre recently and we have a collaboration with Victoria Gate, it’s growing and growing.

Speaking on Black History Month, Ms Edwards continued: “Black history is more so white history, whether good or bad, we have to remember our ancestors that have come before.
“I believe Black history should be celebrated every day, not just one month out of the whole year thats why we have our exhibition pop up (with a hidden figure) we travel with.
“Every time we have an event, people can come stop, shop and learn, and get something to eat.”
