NTT Docomo Inc. and Tohoku University announced plans to jointly develop artificial intelligence technology that can detect gum disease by analyzing photographs taken on smartphones.
The team will begin the project in April, aiming to put the technology into practical use by April 2022.
AI software will analyze images taken via a smartphone app to check for oral diseases. As well as gum disease, the technology will be able to identify oral cancer, jaw arthritis and other diseases.
The team plans to make the app available to the general public so that smartphone users will be able to take pictures themselves to check for oral diseases. It plans to develop another app to be used by dentists to detect oral cancer.
"Because dental-care screening rates are low, we want to develop technology so that app users can easily check for gum disease," Tohoku University Prof. Keiichi Sasaki said Thursday at a press conference in Tokyo.
