NT declares hotspots in south-east Queensland council areas entering lockdown

The Northern Territory government has declared coronavirus hotspots for parts of south-east Queensland entering a snap lockdown.

The declarations mean anyone who leaves those areas and arrives in the NT after 4:00pm on Saturday will be sent into supervised quarantine.

The Queensland government announced a three-day lockdown for 11 local government areas (LGAs) after six locally acquired cases of the Delta COVID-19 variant were reported on Saturday.

Unlike previous NT hotspot declarations, the travel restrictions do not apply retrospectively.

Existing rules mean anyone deemed a contact of a Queensland exposure site is still required to follow the relevant isolation orders.

Health Minister Natasha Fyles said the declaration was based on Chief Health Officer Hugh Heggie's advice.

"It is very important if you arrived today, yesterday, in recent days from south-east Queensland that you look at the Queensland and Northern Territory health websites to make sure you haven't been inadvertently caught up."

Ms Fyles said there was "plenty" of capacity in the NT's quarantine facilities to accommodate new arrivals.

She said there were about 1,680 people currently quarantining in Darwin's Howard Springs facility and 40 people staying at the Todd facility in Alice Springs.

A hotspot declaration for regional New South Wales earlier this week made the entire state subject to NT travel restrictions.

Declarations for Victoria and South Australia were revoked at the same time.

Calls for bipartisan approach to combat anti-lockdown, anti-vax protests.
