NT teenager charged with possessing child abuse material

NT Police detectives worked alongside the AFP during the investigation.

Detectives from the Australian Federal Police (AFP) and Northern Territory Police have arrested a Central Desert teenager for possessing child abuse material.

Police found the material in electronic items and online accounts during a search of his home on October 6.

The teenager has been charged with accessing child abuse material through a carriage service, and possession or control of child abuse material accessed through a carriage service.

In a statement, Detective Sergeant Paul Lawson said police were constantly investigating "this type of exploitation".

"Our presence in the online environment is growing. If you are involved in this type of exploitation, it's only a matter of time before we come knocking on your door," he said.

AFP Northern Command Detective Superintendent Paula Hudson said it was "not unusual" for police to investigate matters involving alleged perpetrators who were teenagers or young adults.

"This case is a reminder that they can be any age or gender and be found in a range of occupations," she said.

"Our members will investigate and prosecute anyone involved in the exploitation or abuse of children, no matter their age or where they may live."

He will appear in court in November.
