NT revokes COVID-19 hotspot status of Cairns and Yarrabah

Travellers from declared hotspots need to prove they have a legitimate reason to quarantine in the NT (ABC News: Michael Franchi)

Northern Territory's Chief Health Officer Hugh Heggie has revoked the hotspot status of Cairns and Yarrabah, effective immediately.

The announcement means the NT has no current COVID-19 hotspots in the state of Queensland.

On Sunday, the NT named Cairns and Yarrabah as hotspots after a local taxi driver returned a positive test.

The two council areas were plunged into a snap three-day lockdown, which has since been lifted, to limit any potential spread.

Dr Heggie said the decision to lift the Cairns hotspot was made after extensive testing.

Anyone who has visited a COVID-19 public exposure site in Queensland or who has been identified as close contact, casual contact or low-risk contact will still need to be tested and quarantine.

The NT has declared the entire state of New South Wales and Greater Melbourne COVID-19 hotspots.

Dr Heggie warned travellers from declared hotspots they would need to prove they had a legitimate reason to quarantine in the NT.

"Strict new border entry requirements are now in place for people wanting to travel to the NT from a declared hotspot," he said.

"It is important you do not travel to the NT unless you have all relevant approvals, as you will be turned around."

On Tuesday, the NT revoked the hotspot status of 11 council areas in south-east Queensland, including the Sunshine Coast, Brisbane, Gold Coast and Ipswich.

Across the Northern Territory, there are 2,222 people in quarantine and 311,291 coronavirus tests have been administered.

To date, there have been 200 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the NT. Seven are still active.
