NT policeman knocked out, man arrested

An NT policeman is recovering after being knocked out while responding to reports of an argument. (AAP)

A Northern Territory policeman has been punched unconscious after responding to an argument at a home in a remote town.

The officer was allegedly assaulted about midnight on Wednesday after a disturbance was reported in Elliot, 735km south of Darwin.

The force of the blow caused him to lose consciousness, Superintendent Mark Grieve said.

"To be assaulted while attempting to calm a disturbance and reduce the risk of community members being injured is unacceptable," he said.

The officer was taken to a nearby medical clinic where he was treated for facial injuries.

Police later arrested a 29-year-old man and he is expected to be charged with assaulting a member of the police force on Thursday.
