NT Police travel to Sydney to extradite man on historical sex charge

Northern Territory Police are bringing the man back to Darwin today.

Northern Territory Police are extraditing a Sydney man to Darwin to face a historical child sexual offence charge.

The 44-year-old was arrested after members of NT Police's Domestic and Family Violence Section travelled to Sydney.

He has been charged with one count of sexual intercourse without consent, from 2003.

The group will arrive in the NT this afternoon and the man will be held in Darwin's Correctional Centre until a court date can be set.

NT Police had to provide a COVID safety plan in order to conduct the extradition, which was approved by the acting NT Chief Health Officer, Dr Charles Pain.

The man will go through the NT's Correctional Services' COVID management plan, which includes two weeks of mandatory quarantine for people coming from a designated COVID hotspot.

NT Police said they would not provide any further details, as the matter is before the courts.
