NT police seek Australian Defence Force help to maintain border checkpoints as more hotspots declared

NT Police say roadblocks will be established on all major roads in the Territory. (ABC News: Michael Donnelly)

Northern Territory police have asked the Australian Defence Force for help to maintain border checkpoints as the NT government declares hotspots in Western Australia and Queensland.

NT Police Commissioner Jamie Chalker said the border checkpoints near Timber Creek on Victoria Highway and at Kulgera on the Stuart Highway would be re-opened, while the checkpoint at Camooweal on the Barkly Highway would continue to operate.

The Commissioner said he had asked for help to operate the checkpoints.

"I've already spoken to the Australian Defence Force seeking additional support to maintain those ongoing," he said.

"I have a high level of confidence that that request will be agreed to and facilitated."

Mr Chalker also warned anyone caught breaking COVID-19 directions faced being fined.

"If we … have a sense that people are just being belligerent in their approach to the CHO directions we will take action," he said.

Hotspots declared

On Tuesday morning the NT government declared the Perth and Peel regions in Western Australia as hotspots for the purposes of travel to the Territory.

The government later declared a number of areas in Queensland as hotspots, including the Brisbane, Gold Coast, Ipswich, Lockyer Valley, Logan City, Moreton Bay, Noosa Shire, Sunshine Coast, Palm Island and Townsville council areas.

The Queensland hotspots come into force from 5:30pm on Tuesday.
