NT police say 19-year-old driver lost control, veered into opposite lane before fatal crash near Batchelor

Northern Territory police say a 19-year-old man was the driver killed in a fatal two-car collision south of Darwin on Sunday.

An 82-year-old woman was yesterday taken to hospital after the crash, which happened on the Stuart Highway near the Batchelor Road turn-off just after 12pm.

In a statement released on Monday, police said investigators believe the teenager lost control of his Subaru Forrester and veered into southbound lanes, colliding with the woman's ute.

Detective Senior Sergeant Brendan Lindner said the impact of the crash was so strong the 19-year-old's car had been "torn in two" and he was thrown from vehicle.

A witness stopped and assisted, but the man died at the scene.

"It saddens us to deliver such devastating news to a family at this time of year," Senior Sergeant Linder said.

The older driver was treated at the scene from by paramedics before being flown to Royal Darwin Hospital.

The section of the highway was closed until night-time as police examined the scene.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.

Police are investigating the circumstances of the crash, and are urging any witnesses to contact them.

The man's death takes the Northern Territory road toll so far this year to 50 – 15 more fatalities than last year.
