Police are investigating the death of a male prisoner at the Darwin Correctional Centre.

In a statement this afternoon, NT Police said a 31-year-old male prisoner died overnight and was found unresponsive in his cell by correctional officers at about 8:00am this morning.

NT Police has released no further details about the circumstances surrounding the matter, but said the death was not being treated as suspicious.

Earlier today, St John Ambulance said one of its crews attended the jail just before 8:30am this morning, but the man was dead when paramedics arrived.

There are more than 1,100 inmates at the facility at Holtze in Darwin's rural area.

The prison is one of the largest in Australia.

This morning, a judge at the Darwin Local Court said all matters involving in-custody video links from the prison had been postponed because of a death in custody.

All deaths in custody are reported to the Northern Territory coroner for examination.
