A 47-year-old man has died on a private property in Katherine following an ATV accident overnight.

A crime scene has been established on a rural block north-west of Katherine in the Florina area of Cossack.

NT Police say they received reports of the accident around 11:45pm.

They say the man was declared dead at the scene.

Another man, aged in his 30s, was taken to Katherine Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

"A crime scene has been declared as police investigate the circumstances of the incident," Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Lawson said in a statement.

St John Ambulance's operations manager Craig Carroway told the ABC it was a sad day for family and friends.

"We had reports of an ATV rollover, paramedics responded out there and on arrival did find that person [had] passed away unfortunately at that scene," he said.

Mr Carroway said the other man had sustained a number of "not too serious" leg and hip injuries as a result of the crash.

National quad bike safety standards aimed at reducing Australia's high death toll were brought in last year
