NT Police charge man over deliberately lit fire which caused 'substantial damage' to buildings, bushland

Northern Territory police have charged a 57-year-old man with lighting a bushfire in Darwin's rural area — the second person to be charged with the offence in the past week.

Police say the MAN lit a fire in the Batchelor region, about 96 kilometres south of Darwin, on Tuesday, August 18.

Officers said the fire "caused substantial damage to a number of buildings and bushland".

The 57-year-old is scheduled to appear in Darwin Local Court on Friday, September 25.

In a separate incident, 24-year-old Kabe Goddard faced court this week charged with one count of causing a bushfire.

Police allege Mr Goddard lit bushfires around the Adelaide River area about 7:30am on Thursday, August 27, when the fire danger in the Top End was at catastrophic levels.

The NT's north is experiencing its worst fire weather conditions in more than five years.

Kabe Goddard, 24, will return to court in October
