Northern Territory Police have charged a 33-year-old man with attempted murder after an alleged assault in Mataranka, 420 kilometres south-east of Darwin.

Police arrested the man on Wednesday after officers found a seriously injured woman on the side of a road earlier that morning.

The woman was taken to Katherine District Hospital, before being transferred to Royal Darwin Hospital.

Police have also charged the man with intentionally causing serious harm, breaching a domestic violence order and being armed with an offensive weapon.

"This was a horrific assault," Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Lawson said.

"Family violence has no place in our society."

The man has been remanded to appear before Katherine Local Court on Friday morning.

NT Police urged anyone with knowledge of the incident to contact 131 444 and quote the number "9830700".
