NT police have charged an 18-year-old man with murder following the death of a 19-year-old man in the Central Australian community of Mutitjulu.

Police said officers responded to reports of an aggravated assault in the remote community at the base of Uluru in the MacDonnell region on Saturday morning.

NT Police alleged the two men were engaged in a fight when the 18-year-old man assaulted a 19-year-old man with a knife.

The 18-year-old was arrested on Sunday after he turned himself into police.

He has been charged with one count of murder and has been remanded to appear before Alice Springs Local Court today.
