Man charged with murder after death of teenage boy in remote NT community

NT Police want anyone with information regarding the incident to call Crime Stoppers. (ABC News: James Dunlevie)

Northern Territory Police have charged a 49-year-old man with murder after the death of a 16-year-old boy at Yirrkala in East Arnhem Land on Wednesday.

Police had said the teenager died after being stabbed during a disturbance involving up to 100 people in the remote community, about 20 kilometres south of Nhulunbuy.

Three men, aged 18, 40 and 45, were injured and taken to Royal Darwin Hospital.

One of the three men has since been released from hospital while the other two are in a stable condition.

In a statement, NT Police Assistant Commissioner Michael White thanked the community for their "patience with police during this difficult time".

"Police will continue to work with community members and urge anyone with information which may assist to come forward," he said.

The 49-year-old man, who was arrested on Friday afternoon, is expected to face Darwin Local Court on May 4.
