NT MP quits, triggering by-election

A by-election will be held in the NT electorate of Daly after MP Ian Sloan said he would stand down. (AAP)

The Northern Territory is set for a by-election after a first-term opposition MP announced he's quitting politics due to health issues.

Country Liberal Party member for Daly Ian Sloan on Thursday said he would stand down from his position when parliament resumes next week.

It will trigger a by-election in the Daly electoral division, which is located just south of Darwin.

"This has been a difficult decision, one that I have taken time to consider as I am fully aware of the implications this will have," Mr Sloan said.

"I was incredibly proud to be elected as Member for Daly at the August 2020 election.

"However, due to health reasons, I have reached the point that I have decided to step down to focus on myself and my family."

Opposition Leader Lia Finocchiaro said Mr Sloan had been an exceptional and humble local member.

"Ian has made this decision with the greatest of integrity, acknowledging he can't represent his vast and diverse electorate while looking after his health," she said.

The CLP won eight seats in the 25-seat NT Legislative Assembly in the August 2020 general election.
