NT man charged over high-speed Katherine crash

Police say by the time the car had been located it had crashed into a light pole on a median strip.

Northern Territory Police have arrested a 20-year-old man after a serious crash in the town of Katherine last week that left four people injured, including two critically hurt.

Police have charged the man with driving a motor vehicle causing harm or death, recklessly endangering serious harm, driving under the influence of alcohol and breach of bail.

The man had been taken to hospital after the crash on Thursday night before he was released and then arrested by police.

The high-speed crash, shortly after 11:00pm on Thursday, caused part of the Stuart Highway to be closed for more than 12 hours.

Two men, aged 24 and 19, had to be airlifted to Royal Darwin Hospital with critical injuries while another two men, including the driver, had been taken to Katherine Hospital.

Officers had spotted a red Holden Commodore heading north along the Stuart Highway at high speeds shortly before the crash.

By the time police found the car, it had crashed into a light pole on a median strip, caught alight and burst a water main.

Police said they were able to remove the driver and the front passenger, but the two rear passengers were pinned in the vehicle and were more seriously injured.

The arrest followed an investigation by detectives from the Major Crash and Katherine Criminal Investigation squads.

The driver has been remanded in custody to appear in the Darwin Local Court.
