A woman remains in Alice Springs Hospital after her partner allegedly attempted to murder her with an edged weapon.

Northern Territory police were called to a home in Araluen late on Sunday where the 44-year-old man allegedly assaulted a 39-year-old woman before harming himself.

Paramedics took the injured couple to Alice Springs Hospital in serious conditions.

The pair remain in hospital in stable conditions, with the man under police guard.

He's since been charged with attempted murder, acts intended to cause serious harm and conduct that contravenes a domestic violence order.

"Thankfully the victim appears to be recovering from her injuries," Detective Acting Senior Sergeant David Munro said on Tuesday.

"Addressing domestic and family violence in our community is one of the highest priorities for the NT Police Force."
