NT beef producers could benefit from increased trade with China

The Northern Territory Cattlemen's Association says its members could benefit greatly should Andrew Forrest succeed in agricultural trade negotiations with China.

Under the Australia Sino Hundred Year Agricultural and Food Safety Partnership (ASA 100), the mining magnate has already been able to get business and farmers to market produce under a single brand.

NTCA president David Warriner says the first ASA 100 meeting held last week revealed the vast opportunities available.

"The group is focussed around beef and cattle.

"China is a massive market and it will have a profound effect on Australia's livestock market," he said.

"The group is more about collaborating among the exporters so that it's not a race to the lowest price, as such, as what has happened previously in markets for both iron ore and beef."

He says marketing the produce under one brand will mean a better price for the Australian commodity.

"Depending how well this group goes and how much more product moves over and above what we are currently doing into China with the boxed beef trade, the extent of that will determine what the effect is on our markets."
