A maiden first-class 50 from young opener Ryan Hackney has held NSW's innings together on the opening day of their Sheffield Shield match against South Australia.

At tea at Karen Rolton Oval in Adelaide, NSW are 4-156 with Hackney unbeaten on 65 and Matthew Gilkes 4no.

NSW advanced cautiously from 2-73 at lunch with Hackney's innings spanning 175 balls.

After the break skipper Moises Henriques was out caught off a pull shot in the deep for 34.

It was a third wicket for Nathan McAndrew (3-39), who had dismissed Blake MacDonald (21) and Jason Sangha (6) in the morning session.

Paceman Spencer Johnson picked up the other wicket with Ollie Davies dismissed just before tea for 24.

It is a new-look batting line-up for the winless Blues, who are without the injured Daniel Hughes and dropped captain Kurtis Patterson.
