NSW woman charged over social threats

Counter-terrorism police have charged a NSW woman over threatening messages sent on social media. (AAP)

A NSW woman has been charged by counter terrorism police after threatening messages were sent to a media organisation.

Officers from the Sydney City Police Area Command were contacted on Sunday after the media organisation received the messages through social media.

The High Risk Terrorist Offenders Unit arrested a 26-year-old woman on Monday outside a unit complex in the Newcastle suburb of Mayfield.

Investigators seized the woman's mobile phone and charged her with using a carriage service to menace, harass and offend and with stalking or intimidating with the intention to cause fear of physical harm.

Police will allege in court the woman sent messages to the media organisation via social media and made various threats over a story that had been broadcast.

She has been refused bail to appear at Newcastle Local Court on Tuesday.
