NSW to probe kangaroo health, culling

A committee will probe the commercial killing of kangaroos in NSW as well as population counts. (AAP)

A NSW upper house committee is set to investigate the health of kangaroos, wallabies and wallaroos in the state, including commercial kangaroo killing.

The planning and environment committee's decision on Monday to establish the probe received unanimous support, with submissions to close in late April.

It will look into the commercial killing of kangaroos in NSW as well as population counts, non-commercial killing, the government's culling policy and threats to kangaroo habitat such as bushfires and climate change.

The inquiry will also look into the risk of localised kangaroo extinction in NSW.

It will be chaired by Greens MP Cate Faehrmann.

Animal Justice Party MP Mark Pearson said the inquiry was long overdue and kangaroo populations were in peril.

"This is a monumental victory for macropods (kangaroos, wallabies and wallaroos) in NSW and beyond," Mr Pearson said in a statement.

"Finally, we can take a magnifying glass to the cruelty inherent to the commercial kangaroo industry and reveal just how bad things are - adult kangaroos shot and beheaded in the middle of the night, strung up on utes as their joeys are bludgeoned to death beside them."

The committee will report back in September, with public hearings not yet confirmed.
