NSW reports 5 virus deaths, 13,018 cases

NSW has recorded 13,018 new COVID-19 cases and another five virus-related deaths amongst elderly people, including three men and two women.

Three of the dead were aged in their 70s, one was in their 80s and one was in their 90s.

"Older age is a significant risk factor for serious illness and death for COVID-19, particularly when combined with significant underlying health conditions," NSW Health said in a statement on Tuesday.

Three of the five had received two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine, one had received three doses and one was unvaccinated.

Two were from south-western Sydney, one was from western Sydney, one was from the Newcastle area and one was from Armidale.

The total number of people in NSW who have died since the pandemic began in 2020 now totals 1953.

Meanwhile, Health Department data gathered in the 24 hours to 4pm on Monday also showed there are 1,070 people in hospital, including 43 in intensive care.

Of the new infections reported on Tuesday, more than 9,600 were picked up by rapid antigen tests and the remainder from PCR tests.

Some 55.8 per cent of people in the state have had three doses of a COVID-19 vaccine.

Amongst children, 79 per cent of those aged 12-15 years have had two doses, while 47.9 per cent aged five-11 years have had one dose.
