NSW reaches eight days without local COVID-19 cases, but alerts continue over sewage contamination

People are being told to get tested even with the mildest symptoms.

NSW Health has reported another day without any locally transmitted COVID-19 infections — the eighth in a row.

But alerts continue for south-west and north-west Sydney over virus fragments found in sewage samples in catchment areas that cover 300,000 people.

The south-west area covers a catchment serving 180,000 people and the alert follows detection of the virus in samples taken on Thursday.

The suburbs affected are Leppington, Catherine Field, Gledswood Hills, Varroville, Denham Court, West Hoxton, Hoxton Park, Middleton Grange, Horningsea Park, Carnes Hill, Edmondson Park, Prestons and Miller.

People must get tested if they are experiencing even the mildest of symptoms, NSW Health said.

The health authority is also continuing a warning alerted on Saturday for north-western suburbs covering an area of 120,000 people.

The suburbs are Quakers Hill, Castle Hill, Annangrove, Kellyville, Box Hill, Kenthurst, Glenhaven, The Ponds, Rouse Hill, North Kellyville, Kellyville Ridge, Beaumont Hills, Stanhope Gardens, Baulkham Hills, Glenwood, Bella Vista, Parklea, Acacia Gardens and Norwest.

The eighth-consecutive day marks the longest break in infections since October 7, after a 12-day run of no local cases.

There were nine cases reported in hotel quarantine.

The number of tests run until 8:00pm on Saturday night was 17,226, almost equal to the previous day's total.

Authorities are also warning people to remain vigilant as the weather continued to warm up and social gatherings increased.

NSW Health's Christine Selvey appealed for people to continue COVID-safe behaviour.

"Now is not the time to drop our guard," she said.

"Everyone needs to continue to be alert to the ongoing risk of transmission."

NSW is treating 72 people for COVID-19 — none are in intensive care.
