Palestine Action Group Will Fight NSW Police In The Supreme Court Over Harbour Bridge Protest

NSW Police are seeking to block the pro-Palestine march across the Sydney Harbour Bridge by taking the activists behind the protest to the Supreme Court, with the organisers determined to challenge the court action.

The protest, which is set to take place on Sunday, was organised by The Palestine Action Group (PAG) in the hope of bringing worldwide awareness to the growing starvation crisis happening in Gaza.

The group alerted police to the protest by filing a Form 1, a legal document which can provide legal protection to protesters if accepted. However, governments have the option to accept or deny the form.

Earlier this week, NSW Premier Chris Minns announced that he would not be granting the PAG permission for the protest to go ahead, citing safety and infrastructure concerns. Meanwhile, NSW Police warned that the next steps would be a summons filed in the Supreme Court to legally prohibit the protest.

Despite the police following through on their warning, the PGA have made it clear that they will be marching down the Harbour Bridge on Sunday.

“We will fight them in court,” the PGA said in a statement shared on its Instagram Stories.

“Whether or not we win will depend in large part on the incredible and unprecedented support we have received over recent days. It is so moving to know that millions of people are with us, like never before, and that so many are determined to march over our Bridge to help stop a genocide.”

The group slammed Minns for his attitudes towards the protest.

“Shame on Chris Minns for trying to stop this movement against the genocide in Gaza,” the statement continued.

“If Minns had his way there would not have been a single protest against this atrocity in the past two years. The people of Gaza would be exterminated in silence, forgotten and ignored by the world. Thankfully, it’s not up to him.”

The group asked for support from the public and those who wish to march alongside them.

“We need statements from everyone saying they will be there on Sunday. We need boldness and courage,” the statement continued.

The case is expected to be heard in court at 12.30pm today. Either way, the PGA say they will be marching.
