NSW Police Superintendent fined for not wearing face mask in fast food outlet

A NSW Police Superintendent has been fined for not wearing a mask inside a fast food outlet at Mount Colah in Sydney's north.

Over the past 24 hours, 65 other people were issued with penalty infringement notices (PINs), including a hairdresser at Auburn shopping centre.

The 53-year-old police Superintendent was issued with a $200 fine for a possible breach of the public health order in relation to wearing a mask inside a retail business or premises,  after being spoken to by police on Wednesday.

Deputy Commissioner Gary Worboys warned police would double their efforts to crack down on COVID-19 offences across Sydney.

"In particular today I want to send a very clear message that we will double our efforts in terms of visibility and compliance in south-western Sydney, in particular, around that Auburn, Bankstown area, in those shopping areas, the central business areas, and also back to the eastern suburbs as well," he said.

Police said 52 out of the 65 PINs that were given out yesterday were for failing to wear a fitted face mask.

Deputy Commissioner Worboys said police would patrol many of the COVID-19 exposure sites listed on the NSW Health website.

"The message is quite clear — police continue to be visible in the community, on public transport," he said.

Earlier in the week, police said people were willing to "dob" in others not following COVID-19 restrictions after a man and woman were fined for leaving Sydney to visit a pony club in the Hunter Valley after a tip-off.

A 56-year-old man from Paddington and a 22-year-old woman and a 13-year-old girl from Maroubra were stopped in the Hunter Valley, after attending a horse-riding club in Denman.

The family were stopped following a CrimeStoppers tip-off by a member of the public about three people from Sydney who were at the event.

The man and woman were each fined $1,000 for travelling outside of Sydney and issued with a $200 infringement for failing to wear a mask.
