A NSW Police officer’s employment is currently under review after he was charged with common assault for allegedly pepper-spraying a fare evader in 2023.
On May 27, 2023, the 36-year-old senior constable, who is attached to a specialist command, was patrolling Sydney’s Central Station when he saw a man allegedly jump over the ticket gates.
After avoiding the police, a pursuit ensued on foot before the alleged fare evader was eventually arrested at Broadway, located near Central Station.
According to NSW Police, it was during the arrest that the accused officer allegedly discharged pepper spray before others helped to detain the man.

Following the incident, an internal investigation was conducted into the suitability of the police response. As a result, the officer was charged with common assault.
NSW Police confirmed the officer’s employment is currently under review.
The officer is set to appear before Downing Centre Local Court on October 23.
