NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb To Resign After Three Years

NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb is about to resign, with her departure expected to be confirmed in state parliament on Wednesday morning.

Webb, who became the state’s first female police commissioner in 2022, is reportedly planning to step down on May 18 perThe Daily Telegraph. Her resignation comes a following three-year tenure filled with both big moments and plenty of controversy.

Webb’s time as commissioner saw her lead the police response to major incidents like the Bondi massacre and the alleged murders of Luke Davies and Jesse Baird by former NSW police officer Beau Lamarre-Condon.

She also faced criticism over her handling of these high-profile cases, especially after she quoted Taylor Swift, saying, “There will always be haters. Haters like to hate. Isn’t that what Taylor says?”

On top of that, Webb has been under investigation for buying thousands of dollars’ worth of gin with taxpayer money, which she gave out as gifts.

She admitted, “I fully accept that at the time I became aware, I should have declared my association to the Hope family,” per the ABC. Webb reportedly had a relationship with the Hope family, who were the gin manufacturers.

Webb’s resignation will kick off the search for a new police commissioner, with Mal Lanyon and David Hudson reportedly tipped as possible replacements. Her exit comes after months of rumours and public scrutiny, marking the end of a historic but controversial chapter for NSW Police.
