A NSW police officer has been charged with assaulting an Indigenous teenager during an arrest in Sydney last year.
Footage of the incident in a Surry Hills park went viral after the 16-year-old boy was treated for minor injuries in St Vincent's Hospital on June 1.
Officers from Professional Standards Command investigated and a male constable was on Tuesday issued with a court attendance notice.
He will appear in Downing Centre Local Court on June 24, charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and common assault.
His employment status was under review, police said.
The boy's family welcomed the news.
"Aboriginal people across Australia have been unfairly treated, racially vilified, and systematically oppressed since 1788," a family spokesperson said in a statement.
"We look forward to the law being applied with fairness and justice."
