NSW murder suspect charged over sex attack

Michelle Bright was found dead beside a road three days after she was last seen alive in 1999. (AAP)

A man charged over the murder of Michelle Bright in regional NSW more than two decades ago is also facing accusations he raped a teenage girl in Sydney's west.

Michelle was last seen alive on February 27, 1999, when a friend dropped the 17-year-old off at Herbert Street in Gulgong, near Mudgee, after a birthday party.

Her body was found three days later in long grass beside Barneys Reef Road.

Earlier this year, detectives from the Unsolved Homicide Unit arrested a 53-year-old man near Mudgee.

He was charged with murder and remains before the courts.

As part of ongoing inquiries, investigators received reports a 17-year-old girl had been sexually assaulted by a man known to her at Regents Park in 2007.

Police say the 53-year-old was charged on December 2 with assault with act of indecency, attempted choking and aggravated sex assault.

He has been remanded in custody and will appear at Mudgee Local Court on Wednesday.
