NSW murder probe after driver found shot

NSW police are treating as suspicious the death of driver in Port Stephens. (AAP)

Police have launched a murder investigation after finding a driver with fatal gunshot wound in the NSW Hunter region.

Emergency services were called to Salt Ash on Sunday afternoon following reports a ute had hit a tree.

Police and paramedics found the male driver with a gunshot wound.

He could not be revived and died at the scene. He is yet to be formally identified.

A crime scene has been established at Salt Ash and Masonite Road, Heatherbrae, after a second vehicle was found burnt-out.

The death is being treated as suspicious and a homicide investigation has been launched.

Police urge anyone with information or useful dashcam video to come forward.
