A man has been charged with murder over the suspicious death of a teenager he knew at Lake Macquarie in the NSW Hunter Region.

About 12.30am on Tuesday, police were called to a unit on Charlestown Road, Charlestown, following reports a teenage boy was unresponsive.

When officers arrived they found the body of a 16-year-old boy.

About two hours later police arrested a 24-year-old man in a restaurant car park at Thornton.

He was taken to Maitland Police Station before being transferred to the Mater Hospital for treatment.

He has since been taken to Belmont Police Station and charged with murder, and refused bail to appear at Belmont Local Court on Wednesday.

The means by which the 24-year-old allegedly killed the teen remain undisclosed.
