A man has been charged after a fatal assault on the NSW mid-north coast earlier this month.

NSW Police say they were called to Frances Street, Taree around 11pm on December 4 after reports of an assault.

Paramedics treated a 23-year-old man with critical head injuries before taking him to John Hunter Hospital.

The man died in hospital on Friday, prompting police to arrest a 26-year-old man.

He has been charged with assault causing death, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, stalking and intimidating and demanding property with menaces with the intention to steal.

The man was refused bail to appear at Taree Local Court on Wednesday.
