High-profile magistrate charged with child sex offences

High-profile New South Wales Magistrate Graeme Curran has been charged with nine counts of indecently assaulting a teenage boy in the 1980s.

The ABC understands Magistrate Curran, 67, was a family friend of the boy, who was aged in his early teens when the alleged assaults occurred.

The alleged assaults took place on at least nine occasions between 1981 and 1983 and are understood to be "explicit in nature".

Detectives from the Sex Crimes Squad began investigating the allegations in 2014 under Strike Force Stantke.

NSW Police charged Magistrate Curran this morning after arranging to meet him at Burwood Police Station.

He was issued with a court attendance notice and given strict bail conditions to face the Downing Centre Local Court on November 22.

A spokeswoman for the Chief Magistrate's office would not name Magistrate Curran but confirmed he had been suspended.

"The Chief Magistrate has suspended the judicial officer in question under s40(1)(b) of the Judicial Officers Act," the spokeswoman said.

Police said investigations by Strike Force Stantke were continuing.
