NSW Liberal MP Ray Williams cleared over illegal donations claims

The New South Wales Electoral Commission has cleared Liberal State MP Ray Williams of any wrongdoing after he was accused of accepting illegal donations.

In February, The Daily Telegraph newspaper claimed the Multicultural Minister accepted donations from Sydney property developers for the benefit of the NSW division of the Liberal Party.

In a statement today, the commission said following investigations it had not found any evidence that Mr Williams had breached the Election Funding Act, which prohibits donations from property developers.

"The usual practice for the commission is not to comment on individual investigations. However, in view of the media reporting in relation to this matter, the commission believes it is in the public interest that a statement be made concerning the results of its investigation," the statement said.

"The commission has not found any evidence that Mr Williams committed an offence under the act.

"The commission has now concluded its investigation in relation to this matter and, in light of the above, no further action is proposed."

Mr Williams, who strongly rejected the claims, welcomed the commission's announcement.

"I take my responsibilities in government very seriously and have always acted with the highest level of integrity," he said.

I look forward to continuing to represent the electorate of Castle Hill and getting on with the job for the people of NSW."

The NSW Liberal Party State Director, Chris Stone, said the party assisted the commission throughout the investigation.

"The party welcomes the resolution of this matter," Mr Stone said in a statement.

"The party always seeks to fully comply with NSW electoral laws and has detailed checks and balances in place to ensure this occurs."
