NSW Labor targets pregnant backbencher in 'disgusting' Question Time tactic

Labor's Tania Mihailuk (left) has come under fire over questions about Liberal MP Felicity Wilson (right).

A New South Wales Greens MP has condemned Labor's Question Time tactics as "disgusting" after the Opposition repeatedly quizzed the Coalition about the political future of a pregnant Liberal backbencher.

Jenny Leong walked out of Question Time after Labor used the preselection challenge to North Shore MP Felicity Wilson to target the Liberal Party over its female representation.

Ms Wilson is being challenged for preselection for her seat later this year and is due to have a baby in December.

She is facing a pre-selection battle against Tim James — the former chief of staff to Planning Minister Anthony Roberts — and another candidate, Jessica Kean.

Labor frontbencher Tania Mihailuk tried to make mileage out of the issue in a question asked to the Minister for Women, Tanya Davies.

"Are there any legislative protections available to pregnant women whose employment is under threat in light of the attempts by Liberal Party operatives to put the member for North Shore out of work?" Ms Mihailuk asked.

Ms Leong said Labor crossed a line.

"Let's just say NSW Labor apparently thinks it's fine to objectify a woman and not respect her privacy while trying to score political points about women's participation in politics #FFS," Ms Leong wrote on Twitter after leaving the chamber.

"I can't stand the Liberals or Nationals or what they are doing to our communities across NSW, but there has to be a line for how we go about kicking them out — #whateverittakes is NOT the answer".

Ms Wilson also hit out at the line of questioning.

"Don't bring my family into this, that's just grubby," she was heard calling out from the backbench.

In response to Ms Leong's criticism, Ms Mihailuk said it was a "serious issue" and accused the Premier of ignoring the "plight" of women within the party, whilst shoring up the careers of male MPs, including Treasurer Dominic Perrottet and Multiculturalism Minister Ray Williams.
