A NSW jail officer has allegedly been stabbed, burned and assaulted by inmates during a six-hour ordeal.

Two NSW inmates have been charged with capturing and assaulting the officer after threatening them and another guard with makeshift weapons on December 19, police say.

They were then held against their will at the jail in Kempsey, before one managed to escape and alert other staff a short time later.

The stand-off continued for several hours, with the inmates allegedly assaulting and stabbing the remaining officer multiple times over the period.

After negotiations, the guard was released around 6pm.

He was treated at the scene before being taken to hospital with a fractured eye socket, a punctured lung, multiple cuts, bruising and significant chemical burns.

Two men, aged 20 and 23, were arrested over the prolonged attack on Thursday.

Each were charged with seven offences including causing grievous bodily harm to a person with the intent to murder and detaining a person with the intent to gain an advantage.

Both men were remanded in custody to appear at Kempsey Local Court via video-link on February 8.
