NSW inmate uses officer's gun on himself

An inmate has allegedly been able to grab a guard's gun and shoot himself during a prison transfer. (AAP)

A prisoner who was being transported for medical reasons on the NSW south coast has allegedly shot himself with an officer's gun and died.

The 37-year-old man was being medically transferred in Wollongong when the "unfortunate incident occurred," a NSW Corrective Services spokeswoman said.

The inmate allegedly took the firearm from a nearby officer and used it on himself.

Reports that officers had fired first were not correct, she said.

The incident is under investigation and an official statement will soon be released by Corrective Services NSW.
