NSW Dine & Discover vouchers will be valid for one extra month until July 31, after it was revealed that fewer half of the 14 million restaurant and activity vouchers have been used so far.
It’s excellent news for those of us who have kept putting off spending our Gladys Bucks on, say, going whale watching or rock climbing or whatever while that previous June 30 expiry date loomed closer and closer.
“People of all ages and walks of life are giving them a go and we don’t want anyone to miss out,” NSW Treasurer Dominic Perrottet said in a statement on Wednesday morning.
“This extension will ensure everyone has a chance to use all four of their vouchers, which I’m sure will be particularly handy in the school holidays.”
Back in March, every adult in NSW became eligible to receive two $25 dining vouchers, and two $25 activity vouchers. So far, over $357 million has been spent at registered businesses thanks to the program, which includes any additional spend beyond the $25 voucher amount.
However, a huge chunk of that money appears to have gone to overpriced snacks at the movies, as well as to places like Hungry Jack’s and KFC.
Almost 17 million individual Dine & Discover vouchers vouchers have been downloaded so far, but in terms of how many have actually been used, around five million have gone to dining, over one million were spent on movies, and around 370,000 were used on things like museums and art galleries.
Meanwhile, some people have even tried scalping their Gladys Bucks online, which is of course a flagrant breach of the terms and conditions.
Perrottet took the opportunity to remind us of the spirit of the Dine & Discover scheme: “It’s not just boosting revenue for businesses, it’s bringing a fresh clientele through their doors eager to try a new eatery or exciting activity.”
Sure.
“Make sure you sign up and use them before you lose them,” he added.
