It’s a great day to be living NSW-side, because the State Government is considering implementing an extra public holiday to create an Anzac Day long weekend from 2026.
NSW Premier Chris Minns has revealed he’s floated plans to create an Anzac Day long weekend, to make up for the fact that this year’s day of remembrance falls on a Saturday.
“I’m thinking about it,” the premier wrote in an Instagram post featuring a Daily Mail headline that reads “New South Wales could soon get a new public holiday”.

If the plan is successful, NSW will align with Western Australia and the Australian Capital Territory in having an extra public holiday on the following Monday, with remembrance services proceeding nationwide on April 25.
“It’s not just this year, it’s next year as well that you don’t get the day off,” he told Triple M’s Beau, Cat and Woodsy on Thursday.
“And we are underserved when it comes to public holidays, there’s a lot more in every other state.
“We’re going to have a conversation about it for this year.”

While the idea of an extra day off is most definitely welcomed (speaking for myself), Minns said he won’t make any decisions until he has consulted the RSL, ensuring that a long weekend wouldn’t take away the importance of the services on Anzac Day.
“I’ve got to have confidence that if we have a public holiday on the Monday, it doesn’t detract from the salience of the 25,” he added.
“It’s got to be the 25 that’s hugely important.”
Is ANZAC Day a public holiday in 2026?
Anzac Day — a day in which the nation remembers and reflects on the Gallipoli campaign, in which over 8,000 Australian soldiers were killed — is one of 10 public holidays recognised nationwide.
WA and ACT are set to observe a public holiday on the following Monday (April 27, 2026) after Saturday, April 25. However, for Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Northern Territory, and Tasmania, Anzac Day will be observed on the Saturday.
In Queensland, if April 25 fell on a Sunday, the public holiday would be observed on the following Monday.
NSW has two extra public holidays, including the King’s Birthday, which falls on June 8, 2026, and Labour Day, which falls on October 5 this year.
