The NSW coroner will hold an inquiry into the 2019-20 "Black Summer" bushfires in the state, focussing on specific blazes and the deaths they caused.

The inquiry will start in Sydney on August 25 then move to regional courtrooms close to bushfire-affected communities, the NSW Department of Communities and Justice said in a statement on Wednesday.

In September the inquiry will travel to Cooma and Queanbeyan and in 2022 it will travel to other parts of regional NSW.

All the hearings will be made available online for viewing.

Submissions by those directly affected by the fires can be made to the inquiry up to July 23.
